zygaena ZYGAENA SAFARI 2002 THROUGH HIIUMAA AND SAAREMAA zygaena

Do you want to see hundreds and hundreds of Burnet Moths and start Zygaena Safari ? Then head for Saaremaa in Estonia at July. Best way is to take your bicycle and one week holiday spending it riding around Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. You cannot keep away from hundreds of Burnet Moths flying around the flowers beside the road.

The scientific genus name for Burnet Moths is Zyganena and therefore the name for this trip is Zygaena Safari. In Finland there exists 8 Zygaena species. In Finland those species are at the moment quite rare and you can see those nice moths only by accident on the best meadows. But if you go a little to the south to Saaremaa or Hiiumaa in Estonia then the situation is quite different. Here Burnet Moths are very common in July.

In Estonia there exist almost all the same Burnet Moths species that you can find in Finland, only Zygaena exulans is not found in Estonia. Six Burnet Moths species have been recorded from Saaremaa and Hiiumaa: Adscita statices (The Forester), Zygaena minos, Zygaena osterodensis, Zygaena viciae (The New Forest Burnet), Zygaena filipendulae (The Six-spot Burnet) ja Zygaena lonicerae (The Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet).
So take a break and start Zygaena Safari. Next
